“The crowd opened their baskets, and Silla rushed to do the same. The flíta flashed into the night, their transparent wings sparking orange light with each flap upward. She gazed up in raptured silence as thousands of flíta flew into the night, illuminating the sky like living stars. Lips parted in wonder, Silla decided it was the most beautiful sight she’d ever laid eyes upon.”
This is the moment that inspired these earrings. It's one of my favorite scenes and I can see it so clearly in my mind's eye. When I read it, I first wanted to draw a stained glass design bookmark, and maybe I still will! But, what I did create is flíta earrings! I wanted to capture the sparkling wings, and I have this acrylic called glitter jellies. (Anyone who's an 80’s kid and wore jelly shoes? Well, this is that in acrylic form) It has flecks of glitter in it that catch the light, so it was perfect for the flíta. I engraved veins in the wings that help catch the light, too.
Each earring features a trio of cascading flíta in transparent glitter acrylic, moving from orange gold to pink to red, like the moment their wings caught the light mid flicker. Every pair carries the engraved texture of veined flíta wings. The transparent acrylic with its scattering of glitter throughout means they catch the light a little differently with every movement, the same way the flíta did the night Silla released them into the sky.
